Talk:Escher's Wallpaper Groups Exploration

Nice use of groups template. The main reason for using this (and not, say, italics) is that it will be potentially easier to make an index. Another plan for it is to have a page for each group, with a description and example, and then all uses of that group will automatically link to the page. So try to remember it whenver you use groups.

The "clear" template is for getting text to drop below a picture or table that it's wrapping around, or any other floating element. Don't use it for paragraph breaking.. use a bullet list like I've done here, or just a blank line in the wikitext. Bryan 22:41, 7 September 2007 (CDT)

This overlaps with Wallpaper Symmetry Exploration. I plan to get rid of the last part of that one, which has a few of these sketches, and just have that exploration deal with marking and first steps into group identification. Bryan 02:19, 10 February 2012 (CST)

Instructor Notes

This exercise is fairly difficult for students at this stage. Some will need help seeing the glide-reflections, others will need help with the rotations.

For the rotations I tell students to pay attention to points where images meet. Centers of rotation are often found at the tip of a snout,abeak, a tail or wing. Another place to look is points where "knees" or "elbows" meet. (Lizards don't really have elbows, but you know what I mean.)

Glide reflections are hard for students: check for change in orientation along a line. Objects may switch from left-facing to right-facing along a vertical line. Or they may flip back and forth between an upwards direction and a downwards direction along a horizontal.
