Checking Tessellations Exploration

Objective: Learn to check if a pattern really extends to a tessellation of the plane.

In the explorations, on the homework and on exams one is often asked to create tessellations. When we draw such tessellations it is important to show enough of a pattern to establish that what we have is truly a tessellation of the plane.

The following are some examples of patterns turned in by students who have taken this class. For each answer the following questions:

1. Is this truly a tessellation?
2. If it is a tessellation of the plane, show where the next "layer of tiles" go. I.e. extend the tessellation on all sides.
3. If there is a problem, can it be fixed easily? Do we maybe need to remove a tile and place it different? Or do we need to start over?
