Not quite sure how to work this in, but there's a couple of interesting paintings by Guercino (Giovanni Barbieri) in the mid 1600's that anticipate Magritte's painting-of-painting work. See: Self portrait before a painting of Amor Fedele (c1650) and St. Luke displaying a picture of the Virgin (1652-53).
Maybe I'll add something to the exercises.
