The colums are mentioned in Visions of Symmetry, pages 244-245, 303, 309-310,and 312. Escher used drawings 74 (Birds), 96 (Swans), and 104 (Lizards) to create the tessellations on the columns. The column with the birds has only translational symmetry, the tessellation with swans has glide reflections, and the tessellation by lizards has rotational symmetry.

Schattschneider mentions in Visions of Symmetry that Marjory Senechal discusses these columns in an article called Escher Designs on Surfaces.
