This image was never printed by Escher, who was unsatisfied with it. Soon after, he printed a second version, Development II, in brown, grey-green, and black.

This image is from a posthumous print made from Escher's carved woodblock. The woodblock was drilled with a hole to prevent piracy, and that hole is apparent in the image above as a white circle at the bottom. This woodblock would have been the black ink block of a multicolor print.
